Microsoft to rebrand Office 365 Licences

Unless June 28th 2011 holds a sentimental value to you, it was just a normal day like any other, but it was actually the day Microsoft changed its licencing model and launched Office 365. Fast forward to today and Office 365 now has over 200 million monthly active users and is a brand all of us know.

The launch of Office 365 was at a time when Microsoft was under real pressure from Google who offered similar services through its Google Apps. So Microsoft designed the Office 365 platform to “bring together” its existing online services into “an always-up-to-date cloud service”

So why are Microsoft rebranding such a well-known and successful brand?

‘Microsoft 365’ is a product name used by Microsoft for an enterprise subscription bundle which includes Windows 10, Office 365 and security services. Microsoft 365 introduces businesses to a ‘Modern Workplace’. The vision of a Modern Workplace is to remove the barriers of remote working, collaboration, and unsupported/outdated on-premise applications, and instead to focus on a cloud only deployment.

So what is Changing?

Microsoft are just changing the names of the ‘Office 365’ licences, you will still receive the same applications and features you have now.

  • Office 365 Business Essentials will become Microsoft 365 Business Basic
  • Office 365 Business Premium will become Microsoft 365 Business Standard
  • Microsoft 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Business Premium
  • Office 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Apps for Business

These changes represent Microsoft’s ambition to continue to drive innovation in Microsoft 365 that goes well beyond what customers traditionally think of as Office. The Office you know and love will still be there, but we’re excited about the new apps and services they’ve added to over the last few years and about the new innovations they’ll be adding in the coming months.
